Sikeston DPS partners with ATF to reduce gun violence

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - The Sikeston Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are working together to reduce violent crime in Sikeston.

Sikeston has received 47 calls of “shots fired” since Jan. 1, 2013.

The city has also had three incidents of Assault 1st or Assault 2nd that involved a subject being shot.

This means that there has been a shooting, on average, about every three to four days.

Historically, violence tends to increase during the summer months; meaning the rate of violence is expected to go up.

These statistics do not include other serious assaults involving other deadly weapons, according to Sikeston DPS.

For the past several months, an ATF Agent has been embedded with the Sikeston DPS Power Squad to help combat violence like what occurred last week.

Upheld transfer law has different implications for schools

MORLEY, MO (KFVS)- The Missouri Supreme Court recently upheld a state law that allows students in unaccredited schools to transfer into other school districts. The 20-year-old state law also requires those districts to pay for students to attend other nearby schools.

There are not unaccredited schools in the Heartland, according to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. School leaders say this is something they are still very aware of.

"We need to be held accountable," said Scott County Central Superintendent Alvin McFerren. "Our children are the most precious resource we have."

McFerren says the new accreditation process holds schools more accountable and that's a good thing to him.
