Sikeston Public Library offers teen programs

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - The Sikeston Public Library says teens, entering grade 6 and up, will be meeting from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning on June 26.

The library says their programs will focus on topics related to the summer reading theme, including geology and volcanoes, Egyptians and archaeology, gardening and recycling, the bottom of the ocean, and outer space.

An end-of-the-year party for teens only will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31.

Rte. CC to be reduced for pipe replacement

Rte. CC to be reduced for pipe replacement

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation says Route CC will be reduced to one lane while crews replace a culvert pipe under the road.

This section of road is located between Route 91 and Route W.

Weather permitting, crews will be working Wednesday, June 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MoDOT says the work zone will be marked with signs. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution while in the area.

Sikeston city manager resigns

Sikeston city manager resigns

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - Longtime Sikeston City Manager Doug Friend has resigned.

We learned Tuesday the resignation is effective starting at 5 p.m.

According to the City, Friend began working with them on Dec. 30, 1985 as the Planning Coordinator. On Nov. 29, 1987, he was promoted to Public Works Director and was appointed City Manager on July 2, 2000.

They say he will remain available for consultation as needed.

In his resignation letter, dated June 11, to the mayor and city council, Friend said:

"This correspondance shall serve as my resignation from the position of City Manager for the City of Sikeston, effective the close of business Tuesday, June 11, 2013.

Mark Twain Lake Primitive Artifact Show June 15

(KFVS) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake announced the return of the Primitive Artifacts Show to the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center on Saturday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is open to the public and will showcase authentic Native American artifacts.

Exhibitors will on hand to answer questions between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Fire fighter training results in quick response to house fire in Morley

MORLEY, MO (KFVS)- A structure fire was kept at bay due to fire fighters training nearby Sunday morning in Morley, Missouri.

According to a Jeremy Perrien with the Scott County Rural Fire Protection District, a citizen came by and notified crews who were training at a station about a block away.

The fire was at a three-story home across the road from the Church of God on Hughes Street.

Fire fighters were able to quickly knock down the fire and keep it contained to the back of the first level of the home.

There is fire and smoke damage to the home, but no injuries.

Conservation Stewardship Program Applications Due by June 14

MISSOURI (KFVS)- The Natural Resources Conservation Service's Conservation Stewardship Program will provide about $175 million in funding for up to 12.6 million additional acres enrollment this year.

Although applications are accepted all year, farmers, ranchers and forestland owners interested in CSP should submit applications by June 14 to their local NRCS office to ensure they are considered for this year's funding. The deadline was extended from May 31.

The voluntary program allows producers to go the extra mile in conserving natural resources while also maintaining or increasing the productivity of their operations.
