Three Rivers to host basketball jamboree

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - The pre-season basketball jamboree will feature teams from Three Rivers, Dyersburg State, Mineral Area and Philander Smith Colleges on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Three Rivers College Sikeston Jamboree will be in the Sikeston High School Field House and admission is free.

The game schedule includes:

  • 10 a.m. - Three Rivers vs. Dyersburg State
  • 11:45 a.m. - Mineral Area vs. Philander Smith
  • 1:30 p.m. - Mineral Area vs. Dyersburg State
  • 3: 14 p.m - Three Rivers vs. Philander Smith

Scott County gets $10K award to repair flood damaged roads

Scott County has received a check for $10,000 to repair flood damaged gravel roads.

Presiding Commissioner Jamie Burger was presented the check by the Mo. Ag. Disaster Relief Fund. this fully-funds the their request for assistance to repair gravel roads damaged by Spring 2011 flooding.

"Spreading rock onto damaged roads will make the roads safer for the traveling public, school buses and farmers hauling grain to terminals," said Burger. "And, also ensure that roadbeds are solid for the upcoming winter freezing and thawing."

The Fund provides grants from $500 to $10,000.

Mo. Insurance Dept. warns of con artists during Medicare enrollment

(KFVS) - The Missouri Insurance Department is asking seniors, health care providers and others to be on the lookout for deceitful insurance agents during the upcoming Medicare open enrollment period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Missouri Insurance Director John M. Huff and an official from Medicare have signed a letter to home health workers in the state asking them to report insurance agents and other salespeople who violate Medicare solicitation rules.

"The vast majority of licensed insurance agents in Missouri are honest and have their customers' best interests at heart," said Huff. "But as with any industry, there are bad actors seeking to take advantage of Missouri seniors. We must do all we can to prevent that, and we need the public's help."

The letter, sent to companies that provide in-home health services to Missourians, lists the following acceptable and forbidden sales practices for agents selling Medicare.

CHAFFEE, MO (KFVS) - The American Red Cross says it is in need for an increase in blood donations after a difficult summer.

According to the Red Cross, natural disasters, record high temperatures and high gas prices have all contributed to a low blood supply. While thousands rolled up their sleeves to donate, the supply remains critical as they enter autumn. The Red Cross says surgeries could be at risk of being canceled at area hospitals because of the shortage.

The Red Cross says it will be giving away five $100 Visa gift cards to five donors withing the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region per day through Sunday, Oct. 9.

  • Oct. 7 - First Baptist Church, 502 Broadway, Marble Hill, Mo. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Oct. 10 - Chaffee Elementary School, 408 Elliot Avenue, Chaffee, Mo. from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

All Male Yard Sale benefit for the Red Cross

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - The All Male Yard Sale benefit for the American Red Cross will be Saturday, October 1 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hosted by the Sikeston Lions Club, the yard sale will be at 417 North Main Street, Carnell's Collision.

It will include things like camo, hunting supplies, car parts, lawn equipment, sports equipment and more.

Fall turkey season opens

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Conservation says fall turkey season is open from October 1 to 31.

According to the MDC, fall turkey hunting is different from the spring hunt because during the fall, there is little or no gobbling activity and gobblers are in small flocks. They say the fall firearm turkey season also has potential to be the most dangerous because either sex can be hunted and there is less emphasis put on positive identification.

Missing child found safe

The Scott County Sheriff's Department says a missing teenager from Sikeston has been found.

A deputy says Arnold Roderick Celestina (AJ), 15, had not been seen since 8 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a deputy, a Heartland News viewer saw the broadcast about the missing teen and called the sheriff's department with a tip.  He was found safe.

The boy was being reunited with his mother.

According to the sheriff's department, Celestina is considered a runaway, but they were concerned about his welfare since he had been missing for two days and asked Heartland News to release information about him.

Deputies questioned his friends but say they have not provided any helpful information.
