Crews demolish flood damaged houses in Morehouse

Change has come to Morehouse. People who live there are starting to notice a lot more open space.

That's because demolition crews are tearing down a number of the homes damaged by this spring's recent flooding.

Workers have been knocking down homes and clearing out the debris.

One woman says this is an emotional time for her.

"My grandma's been here 50 years," said April Sutton of Morehouse. "It's just hard to look at."

This recent activity comes just weeks after volunteers from other parts of the country came to Morehouse to help clean up the town.

Kelly High School catches football fever

Kelly High School hasn't fielded a football team since 1957.

But that's all about to change.  The school is starting a junior varsity team next year, with varsity games slated to start in 2014.

"Everyone is talking about football," said Kelly 8th grader Skylar Lemons. "We're ready to go."

"The kids I've spoken to about it seem to be really excited," said head coach Kenneth Riedinger. "It's something we haven't had for a long time around here. The kids and community support have been amazing."

The community support system is led by the Kelly Youth Activity Association.

The booster club has raised all the funds for the new football field with the help of donated labor and supplies.

"Our community is ready for football. That's something we were hearing," said booster Kristi Kirkpatrick.

Three Rivers hits record enrollment

As the first week of the fall semester begins, early enrollment numbers are set to shatter records at Three Rivers College.

As of the first day of classes on August 15, total enrollment stands at 4,227. That is as much as an 11% increase over fall 2010.

"This is the golden year," said Dr. Devin Stephenson, President of Three Rivers College.

"They're flocking to our classrooms in record numbers," said Stephenson.

It's not just on the main campus in Poplar Bluff.

"Our Kennett center had a 29% increase in credit hour production", said Stephenson. "The Cape Girardeau center had a 48% increase in credit hour production."

At the Sikeston campus there is also an increase. That campus is so packed, they're hoping to build a new one and soon right of Highway 60.

"We've hit 500 students (at Sikeston) this year so we have no room," said Stephenson.
