MoDOT: Missourians to see fewer road projects

MoDOT: Missourians to see fewer road projects

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, a new state five-year highway construction program was approved Wednesday, but the program is only half the size of recent years.

The new program is about $600 million a year rather than the average of $1.2 billion and MoDOT says Missourians will be seeing very few new projects during the next few years.

"We've known this grim situation was coming," said Kevin Keith, Missouri Department of Transportation director, "We have fallen off a cliff."

Keith said the sharp decline in funds means the investment that supported Missouri jobs, improved roads and bridges and increased safety is in jeopardy.

Althea Sutton, 49, of Sikeston is accused of running over Makayla Brown as she and a babysitter walked out of the Fas Gas station on East Street in Sikeston around 12:45 p.m. Police are investigating the incident.

According to Makayla's grandmother, she was out of surgery and awake Wednesday.

They need skin grafs and still won't know for several days if she will be able to use her leg.

Makayla's aunt, Kiley Adams, says Makayla was running a fever on Tuesday and she was to have surgery on her leg Wednesday which is not healing properly.

MoDOT first Midwest state to buy Big Bags

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation says they will be using Big Bags to keep water off the roads and motorists safe.

Big Bags are large sand bags that unfold like an accordion to create a 15-foot long, 3-foot high by 3-foot wide storage compartments for sand. MoDOT says one system of Big Bags can replace 500 sand bags.

“We used them for the first time in the southeast area when flood waters threatened many of our major roads, and now we’re using them on the west side of Route 65 between Carrollton and Waverly for a two-mile stretch,” said Beth Wright, MoDOT state maintenance engineer.
