MBRC announces new health program for women and children

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Bootheel Regional Consortium (MBRC) is announcing a new health care program for women and children in the Bootheel.

MBRC oficials say the Maternal and Child Health Demonstration Project is a 3- year grant funded program sponsored through the Missouri Foundation of Health, established to fill gaps in health care for women of reproductive age (15-44) in the Missouri Bootheel. 

The project will address both individual and environmental barriers to health care. 

Environmentally by helping organizations address social determinants to health care and individually through smoking cessation, obesity reduction, and healthy eating.

Scott, New Madrid, Mississippi, Pemiscot, and Dunklin counties in the Missouri Bootheel, are ranked among the lowest in the state in regards to overall health, according to the consortium.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Mission of Mercy will host a large-scale dental clinic May 3-4 at the Show Me Center.

The clinic will provide free oral healthcare to patients of all ages who cannot otherwise afford care. Doors open at 5 a.m.

Organizers say you can arrive early as the clinic is first come, first serve until they reach capacity. It is open to both adults and children, but no child care will be available.

MOMOM says to expect a long day. Dental services offered will include cleanings, fillings and extractions. They say they will not provide crowns, bridges or dentures.

American Red Cross assists 10 at four fires in Scott County

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Southern Missouri Region of the American Red Cross helped 10 people at four family fires in Scott County from April 5 through April 11.

One of the incidents was a multi-family fire affecting  four individuals.

A single family fire had an impact on four more people and the other two fires in the county left two people in need of aid.

The fires were among nine fires across five counties during the period. A total of 27 people received assistance.

Individuals had insurance on their property in about a quarter of the cases across the counties suffering fires in the 40-county service area.

The people affected were provided a place to stay, money for clothes, food and medicine.

National Library Week begins April 14

National Library Week begins April 14

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - National Library Week begins April 14, and the Sikeston Public Library is putting together a full week of activities for patrons of all ages.

Activites include:

  • Monday, April 15 – Family Night for kindergarten through third grade at 6:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 16 – E-reader training featuring Nook, Kindle, iPad and Android tablet at 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 17 – Preschool Storytime at 10 a.m.
  • Thursday, April 18 – Community service project and activity for teens from 4-6 p.m.

Family Night April 15 at Sikeston library

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - The Sikeston Public Library will host Family Night for kindergarten through third grade will at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 15, for "Ms. Frizzle’s Adventures: Ancient Egypt."

Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus kids are transported to ancient Egypt, where they learn about the pyramids, mummification, the flooding of the Nile River, and other aspects of life in Egypt long ago.

In addition to reading stories, they will be writing our names in hieroglyphics and play a game of “build the pyramid.”

Reservations are required and can be made by calling the library at 471-4140.
