Leaders met to learn signs of child abuse

Leaders met to learn signs of child abuse

MINER, MO (KFVS) - Leaders from around southeast Missouri met Tuesday to learn more about the signs of child abuse and when it is time to report it.

The Missouri Bootheel Health Start Case Management Program sponsored the event.

Those in attendance learned what qualifies as physical and sexual abuse and some common things to look for in kids.

Experts say the number of kids abused is alarming and it's up to community members to put a stop to it.

"One in four girls will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.  One in six boys," said Leasa Stone with Beacon Health Center.  "If you take that statistic and apply it to the latest Missouri census, 356,000 children in Missouri alone will be abused before their 18th birthday.  This is a serious problem."

Stone also talke about what to do when a child says they've been abused.

The goal of the meeting was to inform leaders about the issue in hopes that they will teach others.
