Low birth weight conference held in Miner | Health
MINER, MO (KFVS) - Experts say babies born with low birth rates are a major problem in southeast Missouri.
Friday, about 50 health professionals gathered in Scott County to talk about how to get proper health information to expectant mothers.
The SEMO Maternal Child Family Health Coalition says babies with low birth weights are common in rural and impoverished areas.
In fact, of Missouri's top ten counties for highest rates of low birth weight babies, six of those are right here in the Heartland.
Nurses say the best way to turn those numbers around is for mothers to better prepare for their pregnancies.
Causes of low birth weight include tobacco and alcohol use and poor nutrition.
