SEMO Health Network accepting bottled water for Okla. tornado victims

NEW MADRID, MO (KFVS) - Bottled and Gallon water is being accepted at all SEMO Health Network locations in southeast Missouri for Oklahoma's tornado victims.

Organizers say they are taking the cases of water to Moore, Oklahoma, on Friday.

They are also taking medical supplies and medications.

According to Marketing Director Sarah Ezell, they are accepting bottled water mostly-but any water will work, including gallons.

She says others have donated band aids, flip flops, hygiene items, etc. 

Their emergency response team will take all the materials to Moore, and hope to stay at least until Monday, if not longer.

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - Here is a delicious recipe brought to you by the Downtown Sikeston Farmer's Market:

Grilled Asparagus

Ingredients

10 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed

1/8 teaspoon pepper

5 bacon strips, halved lengthwise

Directions

Place asparagus on a sheet of waxed paper; coat with cooking spray.

Sprinkle with pepper; turn to coat. Wrap a bacon piece around each spear; secure ends with toothpicks.

Grill, uncovered, over medium heat for 4-6 minutes on each side or until bacon is crisp.

Discard toothpicks.

Yield: 2-3 servings.

The Farmer's Market is open Saturdays at American Legion Square in downtown Sikeston from 7 a.m. to sellout.

Sikeston Farmer's Market opens May 11

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - Sikeston’s Farmer’s Market begins May 11, at 7 am,, in Legion Park in Historic Downtown Sikeston. 

There is expected to be a good number of vendors with everything from fresh produce to honey.

This year there; will also be a vendor selling farm fresh eggs at the outdoor market.

Several craft vendors will also be present.

For entertainment, a Bluegrass group that sings every week.

Local vendors are still encouraged to inquire about setting up shop at the market, especially meat vendors.

NEW HAMBURG, MO (KFVS) - The Scott County Women in Agriculture  will sponsor their annual Farm Day for third grade students of Scott County on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

The event will take place at the Fr. Stevens Parish Center (lower level) in New Hamburg, Mo. 

The following schools will participate:

  • St. Augustine        
  • St. Ambrose         
  • Kelso C-7
  • Scott Central        
  • St. Denis
  • Guardian Angel   
  • St. Xavier          
  • Oran Elementary  

Officials say it has been an annual event since 2002, except for the year of the flood due to schools not being in session and not being able to get there.

Food Bank asks for help before losing tax credits

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri Food Bank officials say without help, they will lose their tax credits at the end of March.

According to the food bank, they have $154,000 in tax credits that must be used or the charity will lose funding.

Officials say donors can get a Missouri income tax cut for 50-percent of the value of their donation, and other tax benefits may apply based on the actual tax liability of the donor.

The funds are expected to be used to expand a warehouse facility.

"This is a great opportunity for eligible donors to direct their tax dollars locally instead of writing that check to the state, we just need their donation by the March 31st deadline," said Karen Green, Executive Director, Southeast Missouri Food Bank.

Missouri statewide tornado drill set for March 5

BENTON, MO (KFVS) - The Scott County Emergency Management Agency says the Missouri Statewide Tornado Drill and Severe Weather Awareness Week are good time to prepare for severe weather.

Missouri's StormAware website provides tornado sheltering videos, other safety resources to prepare for March 5 tornado drill during Missouri Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 4-8.

The National Weather Service, the State Emergency Management Agency and Missouri's local emergency management offices are asking Missourians  to use this week as an opportunity to plan and prepare for how they will react and shelter in response to severe weather.

 EMA officials say Missouri will conduct the 39th annual Statewide Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m. If severe weather is in the forecast on March 5, the drill will be moved to Thursday, March 7 at 1:30 p.m.
