SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - A viewer sent us this picture Monday of three chicken hawks sitting on their fence on Friday the 13th.

The viewer says this is not something they see everyday because they live right in town in Sikeston.

Jackson man 1st in Mo. to receive Deer Steward 3 Award

Jackson man 1st in Mo. to receive Deer Steward 3 Award

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A Jackson man received the Deer Steward 3 Award on June 28, making him the first in Missouri to achieve the milestone.

Allen Morris received the award. He is a member of the SEMO Trail of Tears Branch of Quality Deer Management Association which represents Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Scott and surrounding counties.

Deer Steward Level III is the final step in Quality Deer Management Association’s Individual Deer Steward Certification Program. Unlike Levels I and II, Level III is not a course and no test is required. Level III is achieved through personal achievement and long-term service to the white-tailed deer resource and/or the QDMA. For many, Level III status will take years to qualify. Fortunately the effort needed to meet the qualifications will be replaced with pride and satisfaction upon attaining Level III status.

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - We had the first sighting of the American Goldfinch in Sikeston on Tuesday.

They appear every year as the sunflowers bloom. Their color is so close to that of the sunflower, you might have difficulty spotting them.

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - This baby female house finch was on our carport wall in Sikeston Thursday along with a male cardinal.

The cardinal had evidently adopted the finch and was raising it as his own. I read that some birds choose to lay their eggs in other bird's nests instead of building their own. Then the bird who owns the nest hatches it and raises it as its own. I guess this is what happened here. The house finch evidently laid her egg in the cardinal's nest and the cardinal doesn't care. He is proud of his daughter even if she looks like a finch.

I thought with Fathers Day coming up, this was a timely picture showing the unconditional love of a father.

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - We had our first sighting today of a Baltimore Oriole at our house in Sikeston.

He stopped in to get a refreshing drink from our Hummingbird feeder. These birds migrate through our area this time each year. They love the hummingbird nectar as well as orange slices we put out for them.
