Gov. Nixon encourages hunters to donate venison

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Gov. Jay Nixon visited the Harvesters Community Food Network on Tuesday to encourage local deer hunters to donate venison through the Share the Harvest program.

Share the Harvest is a partnership between the Conservation Federation, the Missouri Department of Conservation, local food banks and meat processors to provide venison donated by hunters and processors to families in need.

“For 20 seasons, Share the Harvest has been an important part of Missouri’s legacy of sportsmanship and conservation,” said Gov. Nixon. “Because of the hard work of the Conservation Federation, the Department of Conservation and partners like Harvesters, this year will be bigger than ever.

Mo. Hwy. Patrol: Drive carefully, deer more active

Mo. Hwy. Patrol: Drive carefully, deer more active

(KFVS) - Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is reminding drivers to watch for deer, which are more active this time of year.

The highway patrol says drivers should be especially careful during evening and early dawn hours. They say deer behavior changes because of mating season, which may cause an increase in road crossings. Hunting and crop harvesting can also cause the animals to be in places they aren't usually seen. Drivers are urged to be alert.

According to the highway patrol, last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,420 car crashes where deer-car crashes occurred. One deer strike happened every 2.6 hours in the state. In these crashes, two people were killed and 352 injured.

The patrol says when you see a deer, slow down and proceed with caution.

Fall turkey season opens

Fall turkey season opens

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Conservation says fall turkey season is open from October 1 to 31.

According to the MDC, fall turkey hunting is different from the spring hunt because during the fall, there is little or no gobbling activity and gobblers are in small flocks. They say the fall firearm turkey season also has potential to be the most dangerous because either sex can be hunted and there is less emphasis put on positive identification.
